Although named a high school, it is now a primary school and secondary school. This was taken in Chinatown, Tangra, Kolkata. The Chinese population is dwindling in Kolkata.(A few thousand left compared to tens of thousands just 10 years back) This is a Chinatown that doesn't look like a Chinatown. All the Chinese are migrating now, to make a living elsewhere, to live in better developed countries.

We met with the principal of the school while she was teaching tuition classes during the holidays and she isn't so optimistic about the future of the Chinese people in Kolkata.

It's just nice to be able to see your own kind once in a while in a predominantly Indian place, ya know?

Respect. Who doesn't want it? However, respect is earned, not given.

If you are deist, you believe in a Creator. Not the ones mentioned in all the major religions of the world.
If you are a Christian, you believe in God.
If you are a Muslim, you believe in Allah.
If you are a Jew, you believe in Yahweh.
If you are a Buddhist, the universe is eternal, infinite in its existence, there is no need for a God, nor is there a need to explain the universe.
The lists goes on.
People of different faiths believe different things. Thus, a Buddhist would reject whatever the other faiths believe, the Christian would reject whatever people of other faiths believe. No matter who you are, you are an infidel to someone. For a Muslim, a Catholic is an infidel. For a Christian, the infidel is the Muslim. And so on.

There are suppressed feelings from all religious groups. They feel that others are misguided in their belief, that they need to be 'enlightened'. Or else why would we see pamphlets distributed by the Catholics outlining Muslim violence? Why would we see Muslims strapping bombs to themselves and blowing up buildings?

Religious leaders around the world have called repeatedly for tolerance among the various faiths that exists within this world. The Pope, for example, has always called for peace and understanding between all religions. The Dalai Lama is convinced that all religions can prosper and exist side by side.

But there is one point that all people of faith have missed. How are all these different faiths going to be reconciled? Of the 6 billion people in this world, almost all are religious. History has shown us that no compromise has been reached between faiths. The human race is killing one another, to this day, for the sake of? Religion.

Perhaps the solution to some is to convert everyone else on earth to their faith. But how would others react to that? They would reject this fervently. So how can different faiths reach a stage of reconciliation? This is for the faithful people to answer, because they believe that all religions can live together in peace and harmony.

However, thus far, this has not been the case. Catholics from the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Malaysia and the government of Malaysia are on a standoff. Over what? Over the use of the word 'Allah'? Religions are still far from reaching compromise, much less tolerance.

Atheists all have different views. The only common thing about us that we believe that a God does not exists just like how we believe Zeus, Hercules and Dragons don't exist. There is no way to disprove their existence, but we can almost certainly say that they don't exist. But we leave room for the possibility that they exist as well.(Actually we don't, seriously, Zeus? Dragons? Thor? Pfft)

Why am I being so vocal about religion? Bad things are happening in this world in the name of religion. It's as simple as that. When the Pope makes a statement which is scientifically wrong, what will be the impact? There are about 1 billion Catholics in the world, and the people who trust the Pope's every word will also absorb and preach the Pope's absurd stand. If a science teacher believes the world is 6000 years old and tells that to his/her students, what will be the implications? If the Irish government is helping the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland cover up abuse carried out by priests and nuns on children, is that acceptable?

Why should religion be treated with respect, if it has no respect for human rights, science and ultimately humanity? Time and again, we read about corruption taking place within our governments, and we curse those corrupted politicians! But when religious leaders commit a crime, we are asked to keep mum about it, we are asked to respect religion, but has religion earned that respect?

I always thought Malaysia was safe from the insanity going about the world. That Malaysians understand that religion cannot be used to explain science. That religion should always be separated from it. But in recent years, that seems not to be the case. There are seminars conducted to explain science with religion. There are people who claim that evolution through natural selection and a 13.7 billion year old universe are wrong, and how do they prove their claim? Scripture.

Earlier, I said all atheists are different. Indeed we are. Some believe that it is only the matter of time before religion becomes irrelevant and discarded by society. Some believe that religion will cause the downfall of mankind. For me, I believe that religion will never cease to exist. I only hope for an understanding of religion's role and a change of attitude towards science. That evolution is true, that the world is indeed 13.7 billion years old, that the only way now to slow the spread of AIDS is through the usage of condoms, that religion should always be separated from science, that scripture should not be taken literally and thus distorting science, that there is a dire need of compromise between religions, that not enough is being done for that to happen, that religion has a huge responsibility towards the world and religious leaders should speak responsibly.

Religion is here to stay. My only wish is that never again will someone come up to me and say, "All evidence for evolution were planted by God. God made it seem that the world is 13.7billion years old. God made it seem that we evolved. Everything was God's doing."
In short, people should not be expounding this.

In fact, not only do religious leaders have a responsibility so do their congregation. If a B-grade politician is voted by the voters of that constituency, the responsibility lies within those voters, and come next election, they vote him out. The same goes for churchgoers. If someone in their congregation is promoting creationism, it is their responsibility to tell this person why creationism cannot explain anything.

Are atheists happy people? I cannot answer that, as I have said, all atheists are different. But I am not happy. I am saddened by the state of Earth, by all the atrocities that are being committed by mankind and by the stark reality that it will continue.(More often than not, in the name of religion)

I hope people of faith will understand what Galileo meant when he said, "Holy Writ was intended to teach men how to go to Heaven, not how the heavens go." and when Einstein said, "God does not play dice."

Finally, atheists are often thought of as arrogant know-it-alls. Well, I do find it very arrogant of the Abrahamic faiths(and other religions) to proclaim my grandmother burning in hell. The Bible says she will suffer eternal damnation in hell. She did nothing wrong, her sin was to be a Buddhist.

It is hard to believe that this being most likely evolved from a strand of RNA that came into being roughly 4 billion years ago. The origins of life in earth are still being debated and studied upon, but as science has shown us, it will be resolved in the near future.

IN MY OPINION,

Young Earth Creationists are the dumbest, most illogical and absurd bigots I've known.

I mean, seriously, with that amount of evidences, they deny facts and believe that the Earth is around 7000 years old!

It's tantamount to saying that pigs REALLY can fly.

YECs derived the age of Earth from their scripture and put loads of faith on it.

Faith, as we know, means "believing without evidence". While some faith aren't as bigoted as others, this particular faith tends to reject any opposing theories or explanations, even if presented with a mountain of evidences and facts.

This makes the YECs rejects science.

So, when you encounter a YEC that rejects science, ask him with such questions:

"You believe that the Earth is only thousands of years old even a multitude of evidences and facts suggested the contrary. What are your reasons behind?"

"Fossils which are dated billions of years old have been discovered by scientists. What is your explanation then, for the fact that several dating methods that subsequently conformed the date of the fossils are way larger than the thousands of years you believe in?"

"On what basis or theory are you to say that the dating techniques used by scientists are wrong?"

"We know that evolution take place for a long time, and we've seen and observed evolution taking place in our world. The overwhelming amount of evidences that supports evolution also suggested that evolution took (and is still taking) place on Earth for billions of years. What is your reason to disbelieve in evolution then?"

"Is it logical for a person to believe in something without any supporting evidence or fact, opposing and neglecting the discoveries made by science, which are backed by facts and evidences, universal agreement in the scientific community, and numerous justifications?"

Certainly, they'll invoke their scripture and god to terminate the question.

In other words, they can't answer the questions.

And the only solution to them is god.

To all of you who don't have experience in such debates/arguments, the solution fills in the gaps left (and created) by science. Ask anyone whether they still believe that rain and thunder are expressions show by god. That gap was filled by science long, long time ago.

Lest we forget, only a year before, Balkis was revealed to have spent RM279,000 on clothes for members and spouses for sporting event. And this is just but two of the revelations! Khir Toyo(l) agreed to an interview by the Star, and this is what he has got to say about the whole issue.

Q: What was the purpose of the Dec 17-24 2007 DisneyWorld, Miami Beach and Honolulu trip?
A: It was a technical visit. It was for investment purposes, river management, canal city and the theme park. We wanted to make a second Klang Valley in Selangor - an RM1bil canal city from Sungai Kuala Langat to Sungai Klang which is about 16km.

Q: Why didn’t (PNSB CEO) Datin Khairiyah (Abu Hassan) say that? When Selcat asked the purpose of trip, she said it was to study the theme park and did not mention river management?
A: She made a mistake.

Q: It cost RM366,000 to send the Recce team ahead and yet they could not organise a meeting with the Disney World Theme Park? Are you saying the PNSB officers are not competent?
A: The Recce team was decided by management not by board.

Q: How come PNSB paid RM110,000 for your presidential suite in Honolulu?
A: I am not sure. It was all organised by them. And I didn’t ask. I didn’t even get to enjoy the suite or the facilities. I just used it for sleeping. I returned from the programme at midnight and by 8am I am up.

Q: You say you are a simple man but people would disagree because you fly first class and stay at expensive presidential suites?
A: You must remember when I was the (PNSB) chairman. I have my entitlement. If I were to reduce my entitlement to what an officer gets then what is the officer going to reduce to? I am the chairman. There is the deputy chairman, board of directors, government officers going along. If I fly business class (not first class), then what happens to my state secretary? He will complain. If I am travelling alone it is easier. But I am travelling with a group of people and if I downgrade myself - it’s a problem for the others.

Q: But PNSB said they paid the flight for your children and maid for the trips?
A: As far as I am concerned I paid for my maid and children. I don’t know why she (Datin Khairiyah) would say they paid. Maybe she is against me.

Q: On that Jogjakarta trip, Malaysia paid RM10,000 to Indonesian dancers to welcome the Malaysian delegation. Isn’t that odd?
A: You shouldn’t ask me. I was there as a guest . I don’t know the details. I am the Mentri Besar and I don’t ask all that. I didn’t know RM10,000 was paid for the welcoming ceremony. All that was decided by management.

Q: KDEB also paid RM17,000 for tickets for Balkis to go to China to buy artificial flowers and caps there when the company has a branch in Kepong. Why waste money when the ordering could have been done in Kepong?
A: I really don’t know. But it must have been approved by the KDEB management. It might be cheaper to fly there and order it from there.

Q: PNSB said they had to give Balkis about RM1mil each year?
A: Yes, that was a decision by PNSB. The 1mil is for charity. Balkis uses the money to help the needy.

Q: But the bosses at PNSB and KDEB said they received many requests from you, verbal instructions to pay for Balkis?
A: No. Can they prove it? Which letters have I signed?

Q: Is your conscience clear?
A: Very clear.

Q: Do you think people will believe you?
A: I think so. I still got the number two spot in the Umno Youth Chief elections. As for the public, when I go around I still draw in crowds. For example when I went to campaign in the Bukit Gantang by-election, so many people came to my ceramah. This happens everywhere I go.

Question 4 : What does interracial marriage mean to you?

Question 5 : If interracial marriages were the only way to bring this country together, would you partake in it? Or at least show your support?(Religion plays a vital and problematic role in this)

Question 6 : How do you define being 'Chinese'?

Question 7 : Is being 'Chinese' important to you?

If we reside inside the Milky Way galaxy, how do we know what it looks like?

Here's the dilemma put in more words :
We think of our galaxy as being shaped like a big pinwheel. Yet we’ve never sent a camera outside of our galaxy to get an ‘outside view.’ How do we know our galaxy is shaped that way?
We can’t travel outside the galaxy to take pictures. A space probe moving at near light speed would take thousands of years to get far enough away to take a parting snapshot.

That was the question that was constantly bugging me as I read about the Big Bang.
After a quick google search, I got my answer, from various sources.

1) The distances to stars can be measured using several techniques, and since we know the direction to the stars , we can plot their positions on a 3D map (or 2D with some projection). With enough of the stars plotted, you can get a pretty accurate picture of the shape and size of the galaxy.

2) We have various techniques for measuring the distances to celestial objects. By taking the direction to an object and its distance from us, we can plot its location in space. Thus, even though we are inside of the Milky Way, we can figure out what it looks like by plotting the locations of the objects that we can "see". (Here, seeing includes using much more of the electromagnetic spectrum than just visible light. Dust in the galaxy blocks much of the visible light from other parts of the galaxy, but it does not block other frequencies.)

I would complain about the uncontrollable number of illegal and legal foreign workers in this country. I see a foreign worker cooking in a hawker centre, I'd be the first to exclaim, "They are deteriorating the quality of our food!"
I see a foreign worker working as a waiter and unable to speak basic Bahasa Malaysia or English and would shout in frustration, "Bring me someone who can understand and speak properly!"
I read the newspapers about another crime committed by an Indonesian maid towards her employer, or snatch thefts, or anything of that sort, and I would curse, "Those damn illegal immigrants!"
Yet I would be the first person to complain about things being expensive, food being expensive. And since I am demanding for everything to be cheap, wouldn't businesses employ cheap labour to satisfy me?

I don't get why kids these days have the tendency to have stupid dreams, like starting up a business RIGHT AFTER high school or college.

Things to note(Based on elementary level logic) :
1) To start a business, you need CAPITAL. REMEMBER THOSE WORDS. MONEY IS ESSENTIAL.
2) The only way a kid can have capital is to have parents willing to give them the money to start the business, or they would have to loan money from the bank.
3) To loan money from the bank, you will need to mortgage something. No, dumbo, not that shitty car you got for Thanksgiving. You'll only be allowed to mortgage property, something that stays in it's place, and doesn't lose value as fast as a car.
4) So what now, mortgage the house YOUR PARENTS OWN?

But what's worse than getting crap-quality DVD's? Crap-quality subtitles.

I mean, it is frustratingly annoying when the subtitles are totally off. Not as in subtitles with wrong timing, but as in TOTALLY WRONG subtitles.

Example, my Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith.

It came from China, so the subtitles are translated from the Chinese subtitles. Weird right?

When the words: Star Wars 3: Revenge of The Sith appeared, subtitles showed:

Star War Three. Backstroke of the West.

WTF?

And you can see Obi-Wan saying something like:

And for the grand finale, when Anakin turned Darth Vader found out that Padme had died, he shouted: NOOOOOOoooo....
